Great New Year’s Movie Soundtracks

Thursday December 27, 2018 / Perspectives on Music

Happy New Year from us here at SoundSuite! New Year's Eve is of course a time of celebration, but if you're low-key like us you might pop in a New Year's themed movie and celebrate at home with friends and loved ones. Here are a couple of our favorite New Year's movies with great soundtracks from the past:

'Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!' has an all-time great animation soundtrack. How can anyone top 'Linus and Lucy' from the great Vince Guaraldi, produced in 1964. Even if you haven't watched a Peanuts movie you probably still recognize the theme song as it has been very pervasive in American culture. It's really a masterpiece of Jazz piano in A-flat major and has been used as background music on The Weather Channel and in MetLife Insurance advertisements, and has even been played in space on the Shuttle Endeavor.

For a more modern movie with truly high-end soundtrack chops, we like 'Sex and the City' (2008). This was the big-screen debut after the success of the TV show on HBO and the soundtrack is chock full of Billboard hits. In fact the entire soundtrack album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 back in 2008. Superstars like Fergie, Coldplay, Tears for Fears, Run-D.M.C., Lionel Richie and Diana Ross headline this soundtrack album. It is still great fun to listen to as the movie plays it's sweet story of New Year's romance and even more importantly, friendship.

We posted our own New Year's clip above with a soundtrack that uses more traditional Holiday instruments such as sleigh bells, brass, flute, bagpipes and a choir. Do you have a New Year's montage that needs a fitting soundtrack? Drop us a line and we would be happy to recommend a few tracks for you to choose from.

May your 2019 be a year filled with peace, happiness, joy, music and creativity!
Jamie & Eli
